Why Run

I am Christopher Childs, and I am proud to announce my candidacy for public office in Titusville. The decision to run stems from a deep commitment to the well-being of our community and a vision for a city that thrives on principles of fairness, progress, and community engagement.

One of the key motivations driving my candidacy is the unresolved matter of the Right to Clean Water amendment, overwhelmingly endorsed by Titusville voters in 2022. Despite this mandate, the City Council has yet to adopt and implement this crucial amendment (As of May 2024). As a father and small business owner, I am acutely aware of the importance of clean water for the health and prosperity of our community. If elected, I will tirelessly advocate for the immediate adoption of this amendment, ensuring that the will of the people is honored and that every resident enjoys the right to clean water.

Improving relations with entrepreneurs seeking to open small businesses is another core aspect of my candidacy. As a small business owner myself, I understand the challenges faced by those who wish to contribute to the economic vitality of our city. I am committed to creating a business-friendly environment, streamlining processes, and offering support to those who are eager to invest in Titusville. Strengthening the foundation for small businesses will not only drive economic growth but will also enhance the unique character of our community.

My background and passion equip me with the skills and determination required to be an effective advocate for Titusville. Serving on the City of Titusville Planning and Zoning Commission since 2021 has afforded me valuable experience in urban planning and community development. I am eager to leverage this expertise to address the pressing issues facing our city and to guide Titusville towards a future that reflects the aspirations and needs of its residents.

In essence, my candidacy is driven by a genuine desire to contribute to the well-being of Titusville. By championing the Right to Clean Water, fostering an environment conducive to small businesses, and utilizing my experience in planning and zoning, I aim to be a dedicated leader who listens to the concerns of our community and works tirelessly to create positive change. I look forward to the opportunity to serve the residents of Titusville and to work together towards a brighter future for our city.

Interesting Things about me

You might have already read that I was a Healthcare IT consultant that worked for Johns Hopkins, Cedar Sinai, Wake Forest Baptist Health, NYU Langone, and a few others. But did you know that I am a programmer/web developer that also makes iPhone and Android apps? Did you know that I design, program, and 3D print hardware devices as well?

I am not the best at soldering, but I get the job done.

I started programming in 3rd grade because my teacher was going to night classes for computers (Keep in mind I was born in 1975). My teacher taught us some things in Basic and that stuck with me until I was around 13 and my parents bought a Commodore 64. Sure, you can play games on the Commodore 64, and I played Stealth Fighter a lot, but it also came with a programming book to do things like make a smiley face bounce around the screen. I spent hours typing out the code from the book to get that smiley face to bounce around seemingly at random. I also made a trivia game that only 2 people played... me and my Mom.

In High School I did computer camp one summer and went to Vo Tech (Vocational Technical School) for electronics and had also taken some elective computer classes.

I will skip these for now: Casino Dealer, Armed Security Officer, College, and my early IT career.

Now I own a company with my brother where we facilitate online ticket sales for event organizers to sell tickets and we have a check in mobile app. I am just now adding RFID hardware to the list of things our company offers.

I love programming and building electronics and I still do both as a hobby too. When people ask what I do for work and then ask what I like to do as a hobby, it's the same answer.

Policies

Clean Water

I firmly believe in the fundamental right of every resident in Titusville to access clean and safe water. Recognizing the overwhelming endorsement of the Right to Clean Water Amendment by the voters in 2022, I am dedicated to championing the adoption and rigorous enforcement of this crucial amendment as a cornerstone of my policy agenda.

The Right to Clean Water is not just a legal obligation; it is a moral imperative. Clean water is an essential resource that impacts public health, environmental sustainability, and the overall quality of life for our community. If elected, I will work tirelessly to ensure that the City Council promptly adopts and implements the Right to Clean Water Amendment, reflecting the democratic will of the people.

Term Limits

I strongly believe in the principle that public service should be characterized by fresh perspectives, ongoing accountability, and a commitment to the best interests of the community. To ensure the integrity of our legislative process and guard against undue influence from lobbyists and special interests, I advocate for the implementation of term limits for the Titusville City Council.

Long-serving public officials may inadvertently become entwined with specific interests, potentially compromising the democratic process. Term limits mitigate the risk of undue influence by ensuring that no individual holds office for an extended period, reducing the likelihood of relationships becoming too cozy with special interests.

Term limits empower the community to actively shape the trajectory of local governance. Regular turnover encourages increased civic participation, as residents recognize that opportunities for leadership are accessible and that the democratic process remains robust and responsive to their needs.

My proposed term limits structure is delineated as follows:

Term Limits for Council Seats (Seats 1-3):

Council members occupying Seats 1, 2, 3, and 5 shall be subject to a maximum of two consecutive 4-year terms. Following the completion of two terms, a council member must step down from their position, fostering opportunities for new perspectives and sustained community engagement.

Term Limits for Mayor (Seat 4):

The seat of mayor (Seat 4) shall adhere to a distinct term limit structure. Irrespective of any prior service in the other council seats, the mayor shall be limited to two consecutive 4-year terms. This provision ensures that the mayor's term limit remains consistent and separate from potential prior service in other council positions.

Mandates

In 2020, the global landscape was marked by the unprecedented challenges posed by the pandemic. During that time, I witnessed with concern as governments worldwide and locally grappled with the crisis, implementing measures such as mask mandates and business closures. It was a frightening period, and I firmly stood against what I perceived as draconian measures, advocating for a more measured and balanced approach to navigating the challenges we faced.

My opposition to these measures in 2020 was rooted in a belief that, while public safety is paramount, there must be a cautious and nuanced approach that respects individual freedoms and avoids the pitfalls of overreach. As we move forward, it is crucial to remain vigilant against the encroachment of a nanny state mentality. I am steadfast in my commitment to preserving individual liberties, ensuring that any measures taken in the face of public health challenges are proportional, well-considered, and respectful of the diverse needs and perspectives within our community.

Live Local Act

The recent passage of the Live Local Act by the Florida Legislature in 2023 presents Titusville with new challenges and responsibilities in managing large-scale developments. This act, while streamlining administrative processes, places significant importance on maintaining transparency and safeguarding the interests of our community. As a candidate committed to the well-being of Titusville, I present the following policy framework to guide our approach to the Live Local Act

Recognizing the limited public input allowed by the Live Local Act, it is imperative for the City Council to assume a vigilant role in scrutinizing large developments. I propose regular and detailed reports to be presented to the City Council, ensuring that every decision aligns with the best interests of Titusville residents.

While the Live Local Act may limit formal public hearings, I am committed to establishing alternative forums for community engagement. These forums will provide residents with opportunities to voice their concerns, ask questions, and offer insights on large-scale developments. Input gathered through these forums will be considered in the City Council's scrutiny process.

In addressing the Live Local Act, my approach is rooted in a commitment to transparency, accountability, and the protection of Titusville's unique character. By closely documenting the administrative process and subjecting it to rigorous scrutiny by the City Council, we can strike a balance between efficiency and ensuring that our community's interests are upheld. Together, we can navigate the challenges posed by the Live Local Act while preserving the values that make Titusville a place we are proud to call home.
